interview 4: todd rutherford aka headphonic

Todd Rutherford - Artwork

State your name:
Todd Rutherford

Present occupation:
Quasi Art Director

Website:
I don’t really have an active portfolio at the moment, so heres where i work: www.buzznet.com
(yes, its hideous)

What time of day do you work best?
Day Job: The second cup usually kicks in at about 1130am, then im good to go.
Non-Work Creativity: The second drink usually kicks in at about 11:30pm then I’m good to go

[ ] hot?
[
x] not?

Did you collect anything as a child?
Star Wars figures, Lego’s, and Comic Books.

Pirate or Ninja?
I drink like a pirate and fight like a ninja.

Who would you say influences your work the most?
Non-serious answer: Currently, my over-enthusiastic boss who likes to yell things like “we need a touchdown on this one” and “Lets knock that baby out of the park”.

Serious answer: The myriad talented individuals that i am in contact with on a day to day basis either through the internet or in LA. I’ve never been in such a period of my life where I’ve interacted with so many ppl whose work i respect and whose talent i am often awed by. Its the closest I’ve felt to an actual sense of artistic community, and its a very encouraging experience.

Boxers or Briefs?
Why is commando not an option? I think you’re discriminating against a non-underwear wearing minority, and I find this exclusionary practice appalling. Having said that….boxers.

What will be your next technology purchase?
Considering a just knocked an xbox off the list, Id have to say, a high-contrast ratio 32″
LCD HDTV from onecall.com (thats my shoutout to HO…nohomo)

If you weren’t doing what you currently do for a living, what would you be doing to make ends meet?
This question scares the shit out of me.

Where are you taking design?
Taking it? You’re under the assumption that between me and design, I’m the one driving. I can assure you that I’m not. I just hope it swings by In N Out before we get there.

Who would you interview next?
We have so many talented people in this community doing such stylisticly varied work, but off the top of my head I’d say Dro… or Frank or Sordid or Sesshin or Monglo or Vava or Miggles or Pieratt or The Midginator or Lifeinvector…or maybe gigantoid…or perhaps Empirikal….fuck i dunno.

interview 2: kim michael alexander aka HO

ho_pic1.jpg

State your name:

Kim Michael “HeadOrange” Alexander

Present occupation:

Web Designer

Website:

www.massiveorange.com

What time of day do you work best?

Mornings. Right after I wake up. It feel weird but I can set a pace from that time.

[ ] hot?
[ X ] not?

Did you collect anything as a child?

Star Trek paraphernalia, I still have my crap somewhere. I was a freak I collected the uniforms, and badges, small and large toys and figures. Oh and Baseball Cards.

Pirate or Ninja?

Pirate.

Who would you say influences your work the most?

Saul Bass is a big influence and a hero of mine, most people can see that from my stuff I hope. I get a lost of inspiration from architecture so men like, Alvar Aalto and Ghery are influences. Few others would be Demitri Moor, Ivan Malyutin, Koretsky who were Russian Propaganda Artists.

Boxers or Briefs?

Briefs. Preferably black briefs.

What will be your next technology purchase?

Few things actually… a 22″ monitor, more RAM and probably Windows Vista. (grumble)

If you weren’t doing what you currently do for a living, what would you be doing to make ends meet?

Probably something outdoors or construction, if those failed I’d be writing. I always wanted to do game design, so maybe I’d be there. It’s a tough industry to break into.

Where are you talking design?

Butt3rscotch is my home now. I lurk on Yayhooray from time to time, but it makes me sad.

Who would you interview next?

Yourself? Is that an option? If not, Todd (Headphonic) would be a good choice. He’s often overlooked by the community at large because 90% of what we see is his (super awesome) photochopping. His pencil and ink work is stellar and his design is quite lovely.

Interview 1: Ray Frenden

ray_ftw.jpg

State your name:
Me name is Ray.

Present occupation:
Pixel pusher, illustrator.

Website:
Blog:
penguinx.org
Portfolio:
frenden.com

What time of day do you work best?
The time of day that I’m most productive is square between 1:00 and 3:00 AM. I just wish that I was able to work nocturnally without the rest of the world objecting.

[ X ] hot? You betcha.
[ ] not?

Did you collect anything as a child?
I didn’t collect much then and that carried into adulthood. I have a stormtrooper chic outlook on things. The less I have, the less I have to worry about.

Pirate or Ninja?
Pirate, definitely. Ninja? Are you kidding me? Pfft! Ninjas are for suckers.

Who would you say influences your work the most?
Johnny Craig’s work from the EC comics era. I love it so much that I would marry it, but the Republicans, no doubt, have passed a constitutional amendment banning man-on-ink matrimony.

Bubblicious or Fruit Stripe?
Fruit Stripe; I always used to get Fruit Stripe, candy cigarettes, and Big League Chew from the corner store growing up. I don’t know anyone who could resist putting a full package of Big League Chew in their mouth to mimic the package illustration.

What will be your next technology purchase?
I might have to replace my Wacom tablet. I use them so much that they break right outside of the window of warranty. She’s got a dead spot in the middle.

If you weren’t doing what you currently do for a living, what would you be doing to make ends meet?
If things were substantially different, I’d like to be volunteering overseas for an aid organization.

Where are you taking design?
My sense of design is pretty anemic these days. I’ve been focusing on illustration so long that my design sensibilities are in a state of disrepair. So, I guess I’m taking design into a back room, executing it, and getting more acquainted with its hot sister, illustration.

Who would you interview next?
Dro!
